Andy Murray returned to winning ways on clay as he upset fellow teenager Gael Monfils 6-4 6-1 in the first round of the Hamburg Masters.

Murray, 19, mixed up the pace to comprehensively outplay his big-hitting French opponent and claim only his second ATP clay-court victory.

The young Scot will next play American James Blake, who beat Carlos Moya.

Greg Rusedski, who has replaced Murray as Britain's number one, later faces French qualifier Gilles Simon.

At 72 in the world, fellow Briton Tim Henman is not ranked high enough to gain entry.

Top seeds Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal withdrew from the tournament on Monday citing fatigue following their epic final in Rome on Sunday.
